Bend Rugby Club History
Founded in 1975 by Keith Erickson and John Jeans, Bend Rugby began as a small team of ex-football players, ski enthusiasts, and local adventurers eager for camaraderie and competition. Since joining the Pacific Northwest Rugby Football Union (PNFRU) in 1977, Bend has grown into a dynamic club with a storied history, including multiple league championships and national tournament appearances.
Today, Bend Rugby encompasses the Bend Blues youth program, a men’s team, and a women’s team, offering rugby opportunities for all ages and abilities. A close partnership with Central Oregon Community College (COCC) helps bridge the gap from youth to adult rugby, fostering a seamless pathway for players to develop and compete.
Current Successes and Structure
Bend Roughriders: The men’s team achieved significant milestones in recent years, including winning the PNW Rugby D3 Championship in 2023 and reaching the Sweet 16 at the USA Club Rugby Super Regionals in Las Vegas. In 2024, the team moved up to the PNW D2 league, embracing the challenges and growth opportunities at this higher level.
Bend Lady Roughriders: The women’s team has returned to active play, providing a competitive and inclusive environment for women in Central Oregon to engage with rugby.
Bend Blues: The youth rugby program is thriving, with notable community success at this year’s Cascade Classic, and serves as a key pillar in developing the next generation of players.
Sevens and Touch Rugby
Although Bend does not field its own dedicated Sevens team, it partners with ORSU for summer Sevens tournaments. A standout moment was playing an intermission game at Providence Park during the Premier Rugby 7’s All-Star tournament in November 2024.
For fun and fitness during the off-season or when games aren’t scheduled, Bend Rugby hosts Touch rugby sessions, providing a more relaxed way to stay active and connected. These sessions are open to everyone and are updated regularly on the club’s social media platforms.
Looking Ahead
As Bend Rugby approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, the club celebrates a legacy of success and community impact while planning exciting events to honor this milestone. With the support of its members and partners, Bend Rugby continues to grow, offering a welcoming environment for anyone who shares a passion for the sport.
